i use a brick also if you have some velcro that will work as long as you can get it to stick

imo, it's not really necessary to weigh down the top. If I remember correctly, another member here had a 38"+ tire track eel die from an injury that was cause by attempting to escape with the lid weighted. imo, if the fish wants out, it will either get out or injure itself attempting to.

I don't do anything special to keep my eels in.. 'cept tape down any HOB return falls.. spiney eels seem to enjoy alot of water circulation. If your eesl trying to jump.. something in it's environment is makeing it unsuitable. I agree that it depend son the Oscars aggression levels.. but I also don't advise the pairing because of the bio-load of the Oscar. Spineys tend to be sensitive to water quality issues. being scaleless fish they are extremely sensitive to ammonia, though i've personally never found them very sensitive to nitrates. My guys are prolly average on the bio capasity for their size. but they are big fish. Make sure your running approx 10x on your filters. or a 125.. 1250 gph more would be better. Or the bio capacity approx of a 2.5 to 5 gallon bucket. and a min WC schedule of 25-50% once a week. I've found this is an acceptable current for most fish and keeps the spineys happy.

i have 2 emperors and 2 magnum 350s on it atm hope thats enough if not i will just replance the emperors witha ac 110 or something like that

emperors 280s or 400s? either should work but the 400s would be better. depending how your running your magnums you should have plenty of bio-capacity then, and current. I've got 2x emp 400s on my 75 and it keeps everyone happy.

I found tanganikan leopard eels roll over and die with high levels of nitrate.

i also plan on putting in quiet a few plants to help with nitrates plus weekly or biweekly waterchanges

not an expert on fire eels however I have been doing quite a bit of investigation on them and meeting with a 3 foot one Snuffles about 2x a week....

They like a planted tank the heavier the better... Memphis is loving the tank now that it is just him and the catfish both shy sorta he loves to sit on his tail and watch me

I have had Oscars and they love to tear the plants up just for fun  nothing more they do not eat them, just rip them up

The eel likes the sandy bottom and the oscar will just toss it around again for no reason the Oscars seem to love to move anything you put in the tank :headbang2 as if to say it is my house and I want this over here......

so you will be forced to have your hands in the tank quite often and dep. on the eel he may have an issue with this

then it comes down to feeding Oscars seem to eat very quick grab it all and run while my eel likes to sit down with a small pile of worms and eat one at a time  I do not see an Oscar waiting his turn or even sharing

my vote would have to be that these two fish are not ideal house mates. The rope fish is more outward going that might be a better fit.
:nilly: If you really want one because they are so cool get yet another tank :) that is what I have done

1 tank for puffers
1 tank for fire eel
1 tank for cichlids
1 tank for shrimp
1 tank for corals and Nemo
1 tank for Guppies

cleaning is an all day thing here :screwy:
