Yep. Very much normal. When they fight they flare the red part of their gills to look bigger. I have a few pics of mine fighting with each other that I'll try to find and post. They are fantastic to watch when they do this.Just noticed the red gills. Is that normal?
you keep cichlids and Sunfish TOGETHER?????Not the greatest pics, but you can get the gist with them. Firemouths have so much personality.

Yeah, I do. The Sunfish in the pic is getting pulled soon.It likes to break up the fights and gets used and abused by the other fish. My Daughter couldn't live DAD!!! without adding the Sunfish, so I added them. The green sunfish is an interesting addition though.you keep cichlids and Sunfish TOGETHER?????

I kept them in a totally septate system for four weeks. De-wormed them a few times and watched the tank for anything suspicious. This was when something (I still haven't figured out what yet) burst out of the creek chub.) They were my first new fish after joining this site, so my first real time qt'ing any fish. It was an interesting and eye-opening experience.methods of quarantine and treatment beforehand??
