Fire mouth pics

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'm a big fan of Firemouths, they are great cichlids and I love the character of the fish.
All the thorichthys are great cichlids to keep.
They are at their best and show better colours and more complex behaviour when kept in groups. They are a social fish in nature and like the company of their own kind.

Here are some I have kept.i once had a group of 20 in my 7x2x2 it made a really interesting tank.

If your only familiar with firemouths, there are around 10 other thorichthys available and we'll worth looking into.
Below is another favourite of mine, Thorichthys helleri.

20!! I bet that was an awesome tank! I might do something similar for my next tank. They are fun.

Hi Steve,
I do have more pictures but they are on an old phone, along with other various cichlid pictures I must get round to retrieve.
The fish in the picture is from laguna Noh.
I only had that one at the time.I did drop on three more much later.I have never been lucky enough to find any being sold in numbers.
I have always liked the idea of 10 meeki and 10 pasionis together. There are several locations in the wild where these live side by side. The contrast of the red and yellow makes an attractive display.
I will find a nice size group one day and I won't be able to resist when I do.
Where did you get yours from Steve?Does it have catch location?

Thanks for the info, I really want to do something similar. Not as many.
I had bought the t. Pasiones from Jeff Rapps, but I didn't asked about the catch location unfortunately. I had more, but the rest mysteriously died while in QT. They seemed healthy, no signs of bloat or aggression. I didn't bother to ask him, because I think they sold out shortly after.
I am planning on moving stock around in the 150g and sticking to this stock:

1 c. Robertsoni
1 t. Salvini
2 h. Deppi
4-6 t. Meeks
4-6 t. Pasiones

From your list I am yet to keep robertsoni. A fish I have always fancied. I like eartheater type fish
I also like social cichlids that live in group's so robertsoni ticks all the boxes.

The Criboheros (formerly Astatherines) seem to be Central America's evolutionary equivalent to Thorichtys.
When meeki flare those gills, beside the general increase in size, the two spots look like eyes, and making them appear even more formidable.
A longimanus always seemed the equivalent to meeki, but without the eye spots

young robertsoni

and rostratum

all highly social eartheaters, as long as the tank is adequate.
My goal while now in Panama, is to catch and raise alfari, altifrons, and with luck, rhystisma.
