Sorry if I seemed to go off topic, but it seems to me, many members here do not realize the large number of options, and species choices of Central American cichlids actually available (present company excluded (you know who you are)). And especially the social cichlid types like Thorichthys and Criboheros that work really well shoaling, and can be sometimes be more rewarding then a simple lone predator.
The behavior my group of over a dozen rostrum from Ciclids of the Americas displayed was always interesting, and the plants able to be kept with them, added another dimension.

I couldn't agree more.I find same species set ups of gregarious cichlids more rewarding than any other set up I have tried.
They normally allow more intricate aquascapes that actually look to fit the fish more scale wise.
I also find the behaviour more interesting in these set ups.

From your list I am yet to keep robertsoni. A fish I have always fancied. I like eartheater type fish
I also like social cichlids that live in group's so robertsoni ticks all the boxes.

C. Robertsoni is an amazing fish to keep. Very peaceful and gorgeous. You'll love them for sure. They do very well with thorichthys too.

Edit: see the fins on the robertsoni? This is the problem w/ keeping astyanax tetras w/ cichlids. At least the bigger older slower ones.
My meeki never have this problem and do a lot of chasing.

I’ve got mine in with 2 Oscars, a Green Terror and a Red Texas. They have been in there for almost two years now and are doing great. They are feisty though and will pick on anything smaller then they are.
