I only have egg crate as lids. :( So I need them to be larger....

I have a solution for you. At walmart in the sewing and fabrick section I buy this fishnet material with holes the size of a BB. Just lay this down first then lay the eggcrate overtop. problem solved. good luck. I have used this befor for my smaller eels. I also love the tt & fire eels and curently have one that is 18-24 months old. I have had her for 13 months. she is 18in. hand feeds on night crawlers or market shrimp. She had a sister same size that died for NO reason a few moths back. I will add two more things I consider important. 1 - spiny eels need more disolved oxygen than most other fish. I acomplish this by having good surface agitation from more than one source (powerhead at one end making waves and 12"+ air bubler at other end of tank to break surface) 2 - cover heater or put it in sump where eel cant touch it. I had a nice fire eel kill herself with a self inflicted burn.

Put the fabric on top of the egg crate ;) you can also use the mess for screen doors most is weather proof and pretty strong

Once they get around 12'' they will begin to bulk up. Even when around 10'' they can have thick tails, there body behind there head will stay skinny till there 16''-18''. Then they will start to even out and as with any fish plenty of food will plump them up .

Heater covers should be used but if its kept high up enough and plenty of cover is provided they it may not be necessary

Thanks, still trying to decide if I want to risk this really. I would love to have a group of them. That would be most awesome! :D

Its seems blood worms or any type of worm period are their prefered foods huh? Dang. I've got most of my fish on brine shrimp and pellets at the moment. Can't find any good sources of mysis yet...:( One of the LFS gets in 'black worms' but they are really nasty ol' tubiflex. Not cool. Don't really trust the frozen bloodworms around here either. Might give them a try though.
