Fired Up About Fire Eels!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I want to get my tanks set up better, find some that are the right size, and make sure I have everything ready first.
Really want to get my 300gal up and running first, as that is where they will be ultimately going. :D For now I believe I will be putting them in a 55gal, then bump them up to the 125gal as they grow, finally putting them in the 300gal.

It'll be a few weeks probably before I get them. :( IME its better to plan ahead and be patient, make sure you do things right, then to just jump in head strong. :)

Look forward to seeing them. I think they are definitely worthwhile.

Tire tracks better-But i'm partial to them also....
Congrats on the move to eels man-You wont be dissapointed-
I came in to add info to the topic-But most people have covered just about everything I can think of at the moment-----If you want to hand feed the guy-Stay away from live foods....Especially if it's a larger one.....Secure your tank damn good man-Once these guys get a bit bigger the force they hit with is unreal....

Got any more ?'s-feel free to ask-

And just cause everyone else has-I might as well leave my big pic here as well-
My tire track....

Sounds great

yes peacocks do have small mouths that make it difficult to eat certain foods

As for the breeding i have heard that ghost shrimp can be some what of a threat to fry but i don't think it will be to much of a problem

Also tiretracks and fire eels will eat smaller fish and shrimps but it seems that fire eels usually won't eat small fish till they get a little older( around 14'' or so) same with tire tracks but they seem to eat small fish sooner then fire eels

And for there activity my tire track eel burrows all the time but i'm hopeing that with more tank decor and when he gets bigger he will become more out going

While my old fire eel was alot more out going it would be swiming around exploring my tank and hideing only part of the time so it does come down to the individual fish so when picking out an eel look for a large one with vibrent colors that is out and about exploring its tank not just burrowed under something

Thanks!!! I haven't completely moved on over to eels, lol, still love my Crenicichla. Just thought I would give them a try. They do look very fascinating, and seeing a large one in a tank is just crazy cool. Not very common!! At least not to me. Your tire track is AWESOME! Love it. I'm still partial to fire eels though, I'm a sucker for reds, yellows, and blacks...haha.

How large will the fire eels have to be before they will start eating ghost shrimp and the like? Will they eat mysis and sinking pellets?

Is there a way to sex them, or is it just a guesstimation?

If I get ich in the tank, or any type of disease, how do I treat it? I assume they are like clown loaches and black ghost knife fish right?

I figured they got along just fine. I was more concerned with treatmeant of ailments and the like. ;)

Which grows faster? The tire or the fire? I am tempted to get a group of each. They DO both look very attractive. Are there any other large growing eels that get close to the Tire and Fire sizes?

Well, mine seems to get to fight nowadays, good thing i put a lot of hiding spots for them. If your eels are sick, use aquarium salt (dissolve in a glass of water before putting in tank) and heater (with heater guard).
I'm not sure about who grows faster, Don't get many eels or agression will soon follow when they reach maturity.
If you want to check who grows faster (just a suggestion) get both fire and tiretrack eels (1 pc each) which has the same size so you can compare then every month.
Regarding on how to get your eels to grow faster, try power feeding them (2x a day), but make sure you also skip feeding them the next day, you don't want your eels to encounter liver problems and swim bladder problems.
