Fired Up About Fire Eels!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 2 tire track, a fire eel,and a black spot all living together in a 150. They are from 16-20 inches long. The fire eel and black spot share a 2 inch pvc tube most the time, it's a little crowed.

Cover all of the heated part of your heaters,I would find my eels laying at the top of the tank wrapped around the heater some times. Pat at Amazon Stingray has a nice clean way of covering heaters to protect his rays.

I also have 2 peacocks,a zigzag and a baby tire track in my 90 gallon community tank.

The larger eels live on night crawlers, they are nice and fat. They eat from my hand, The fire eel used to come a few inches out of the water to get his worms. The bigger tire track loves krill. The little guys live off whatever I feed my community tank.

I currently have three Peacock eels in a 55 gallon with various eartheaters and dwarf loaches... one has achieved the full size of 12", but the other two stay around 4-5". I'm not sure if it's conspecific aggression, or they just don't eat as much. The footlong eel hand feeds nightcrawlers and trout worms (yes, my peacock handfeeds! ::gush::), and has even been known to make cherry barbs disappear over night!

Hey all. Just found this thread while searching for info on fire eels. I'm looking to add one to my 150g. One of my LFS has one named Snuffers that i think is 8years old. He/She (can't remember) follows you when you come to the aquarium and they said loved to play with laser pointers. I've wanted one since but was waiting to get a bigger tank. Anyways I just wanted to hop on and check for any more tips or hints.

Probably the best Fire Eel /Eel thread period!!!! :D

Still working on getting a large Fire Eel. The LFS sucks for pricing around here....am starting to believe an online order is inevitable. :(

Pretty neat how you have the slate laying on the pvc.. is it fastened down? My fire eel would knock it off daily as he completely rearranges my tank.
