Do they look the same when they are smaller? Around an inch? Because I bought a a midas, destroyed my tank. so I took him to a pet store. Now I am now looking for a firemouth, which i heard arent as agressive, but the place where I found them at, they look just like my midas. I dont want to buy a firemouth, to find out it's really another midas and it will destroy my tank.

At around an inch 90 percent of cichlids look the same to the eye of a new fish keeper. Take some pictures with your phone post them on here, get some feed back and go from there.

Btw, if your tank is bigger then a 20 gallon go for a group of firemouth, wait for a pair and take the others back. Watch babies come out of eggs and grow... its really fun!!!!

If your tank is large enough, firemouths will go nicely with a pair of convicts. If its not large enough the firemouth will make a nice dither untill the convicts try to kill it while they are protecting eggs or fry. Firemouths and convicts are the best fish IMO, to start out with in the cichlid hobby. If there is a private pet store in the area, you may look into shoping there. I try to not support the large chains, although in some areas it is all people have. Good luck and I hope all turns out well for you.

This is a really commonly asked question... from my experiance most cichlids are at there maximum size by 2 years old with weekly water changes and regular feedin. This can be sped up substantially by doing more frequent water changes and feeding high protien foods. If you do this be sure to give a day of no feeding and no water changes a week, and be sure to include some high fiber foods to help them digest (spirulina flake is very high in fiber). In my 180 gallon tank I'm am speed growing a lot of fish. I am currently doing water changes every day at 50% except Sunday, and feeding twice a day, once with either blood worms, mysis shrimp, or brine shrimp and once with either kens vegitable flake or spirulina flake. Viriaty is key to good color.. godd luck.
