firemouth and midas/red devils

Look closely for spangling around the gill plates, also a red lining on the dorsal fin. At a small size the red will be very faint so will the spangling, the guys at the shop will think your weird looking that close, but it'll be your best indication.

It should be present at that size.... faint but present. How big is your tank and its inhabitants?

Not sure, give it a few days and let them color up.. there probably stressed right now... pretty hard to tell from the pictures, and I'm on my phone so I have a small screen.

That's a picture I just took for you. This is an about inch and a half, close relative of the firemouth. Its a thorichthys areus.... see the spangling? This is one of the dominant ones of the 9 I have. I am believe it to be a male by its behavior. The color is very strong in that fish as it is one of 3 dominant fish in the group. You should be able to look at your fish and compare it to mine in body shape and head structure....

Here is a short video of my meeki pair defending some fry, the video was shot about 3 years ago and I put it on you tube about a year ago... it is of poor quality and I am sorry it was taken with a phone.... if. You are still unable to tell I will have to dig through some old pics to see if I have any of my pair when they were young, I had a group of 6 but once a pair was formed I got rid of the other 4. I might be able to find a picture somewhere but it will take some digging and there may not even be one. Good luck.

Do not go by the head shape of the fish in the background, it is a robertsoni and they have diffrent head shapes.

you should be able to see a red mouth, red tipped dorsal fin on a 1" firemouth
with a much less pointy face as a devil or midas
