hey guys so my firemouth cichlids paired and laid eggs of which are 1 day old free swimming fry, there in a 75 gallontank with 4cons a severum and a pleco, i wanted to know if i should leave the fry in the tank with the parents or remove them to my quarentine tank, and if i do remove them how? their tiny, far too tiny to net. im afraid the severum will make a snack outa them if i dont remove them, can the parents protect them? this is my first time dealing with babies so any advice would be greatly appriciated. thanks!

If I were you I would take the babys out, only because I would want to raise them. I would put them into a seperate tank as soon as they start swimming around. Otherwise theres a good chance they will be snacks for the other fish.
You can take them out by siphoning them into the new tank. The parents will look around for the fry for a little then settle back down. As soon as the yolk sacks are gone on the fry you could feed them BBS, or really finally crushed flake. But I've never breed firemouths before, so I'm just guessing.

No is should not hurt them, at least that is what I did with my angel fish fry. Just make sure that the air line tubing is bigger than the fry.

How big is your quarentine tank??

Just saying because if you want to watch the parents raise them, if they will, you could put them both in that tank, but then you risk that the parents will eat the fry from stress or something.

syphoning is highly recommended by alot of people when removing eggs or very small fish, i haven't had any babys from my firemouths yet, but thats not saying anything. i hope some one with much wiser words then i comes along but as of know you have what we've got.

best of luck!

lol thnx guys i really appriciate your input! i actually have two quarentine tanks, a 10gallon and a 2.5 gallon. i dont wanna stick two 4-5 inch firmouths in a bare ten gallon so i was thinking of just keeping the fry in the 2.5 gallon or 10gallon at the moment. maybe ill just siphon out half of them and let the parents take care of the other half in the 75gallon...

That sounds like a plan! That way if the other fry become food, you still have the others. As to what tank you should put half the brood in I don't know. Someone elses input would solve that problem.

what other fish are in the tank??????? i had a pair of cons breed in a tank with 16 4" clown loaches and a bunch of cichlids includeing a dovii cichlid and they raised them till they got around a inch then they stoped being aggressive and the other fish took care of them.......
