FIREMOUTH Cichlid (Two Subspecies or the same)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Just variance within the species. there are no subspecies untill it is decided by man, its possible the concave and convex face type could be different localities. Also, is it just me or do the concave-faced ones seem to have more red...

Icthyologists for south american cichlids are probably the most lazy people on earth. never get anything done and when they do its wrong and they just spend another 10 years to reverse it. you count scales and fin rays, compare behaviour and locality IS IT THAT ****ING HARD? they just milk their funders for more trips to south america probably.

on the subject of concave, I saw a whole tank of them in the LFS the other day and wow, they had amazing colours. I do agree that at least at smaller sizes, the concaves have better colours

Spoken by someone who truly has no idea what theyre are talking about. :banghead: firemouths are central american btw. Good thing your not an icthylogist cause youd end up in the wrong country when you went to count some scales and fin rays...:) these fish are more than likely f20 and have no genetic comparabililty to any wild population and have the concave from a genetic deformity. Just firemouths people.. Figure it out:banghead:

will you shut the **** up about central america? north america and south america are continents, central america is an area within SOUTH AMERICA.
mexico by all geographic accounts is one of the 3 north american countries, Canada, USA and Mexico.

maybe I know more than you think? if the only counter argument you have is the central vs south argument then go hang your head in shame

The sheer fact that you call out icthylogists as lazy without knowledge or any experience as what they actually do is just plain ignorant and rude. Those people helped build the hobby to what it is and the lack of respect for people with actual credentials is sad on your part. Who are you to call out what these guys who have thousands of field and lab hours and degrees in the field??

these guys do nothing. the people that made the hobby we call fishkeeping today are Hans Baensch and his assosciates from Germany. we have them to owe thanks for everything we have done.
Ichthyologists are not just lazy in some cases they are plain stupid or just seem like they are trolling the hobbyists. nobody keeps melanerus. which is now the same species as Synspilum, so instead of logically calling it a synspilum they just decided everyone should now call the Synspilum "Melanerus" for no other reason then because they felt like it.

I acknowledge what they do, they study fish. and are supposed to class them into the right families and work on Taxonomy. something which the south american cichlids could use more of. the fact that african cichlids have been classified with such accuracy and knowledge suprises me. until I realise that these are different people to the south american icthyologists. the african cichlids are all in logical groupings, you can tell by looking at a fish where it stands. the south americans are all over the place and have been for a very long time.

they may have thousands of lab hours and degrees and study in the field but they haven't done anything to really show for it. the fact that someone like me can come along and say they aren't doing there jobs right is a smack in the face considering how long they have spent doing there "job". Hobbyists would do a better job at classifying than half of the icthyologists working on the south american cichlids right now.

I agree icthylogists are by inlarge "Stupid".... look at the mess they made of understand Labiatus and citrinellus....

PS fishman09... you're a right one to critise about being ignorant and rude
