does anyone know about how long it takes for a firemouth to reach adult size?? More importantly, i guess, how long it will take before they really start displaying that awesome orange color. mine is about 3-4 inches right now, and the blue and red on his dorsal is nice, as well as some of the blue on his body, but he just hasn't shown that beautiful orange oin his belly yet...any suggestions? or do i just have to wait and see?

Diet, water quality and lighting are all important factors. My firemouth is only about 4" but due to the other factors he looks great.

A lot of it has to do with the breeding and genetics of the fish. I see it a lot in peacocks. Even at 2in some Regal and Red peacocks will show GREAT adult color while others will still look like females. The same goes for any fish. Some are just from better stock than others. Be VERY selective about the fish you buy b/c if done right. . . you'll have them a very long time.

food is important, try to feed variety of food such as mysis shrimp, bloodworms, brimshrimp, krill..etc.
and also the lighting and gravel affect on the color of the fish
I put mine in the tank with black gravel. it really showed the irrisident blue spots on its body and the whole fish just looked more colorful...

I fed mine a lot of nightcrawlers and Cichlid Bio-Gold+ pellets and he began to
grow.Cichlid Bio-Gold+ pellets help cichlids grow and bring out their color. He is about 5in right now.His colors comes out when he get mad and it stays until I shut off the lights. He is still growing but starting to slow down a bit.He gets alot darker than in the pic.

Heres mine!!!

IME the coloration of a firemouth depends first on genetics and second on mood/health, colorful youngsters keep their coloration more or less
