firemouth growth

My cousin has some firemouths that he has had for a year and a half in a 55 and they are still about 2-2.5". I posted something on here a long time ago about them with some pics and I think you guys came to the conclusion it was some type of sub-speices or something like that.

Certainly agree with the genetics idea. I have owned Firemouths in the past and they looked ok by 3" or so, but I have recently picked up a F1 Firemouth from Jeff Rapps ((TUIC) and it is less than 2" and has great colour already.
 
I got mine at 3" last bag on the table at an auction mated pair for$1.Unfortunatly being bagged together the male beat the female to death.Really awesome orange belly on him been keeping my eye out for another female
 
Here is mine. A hair over 5". Mean & nasty, everything he shouldn't be. Hell, he even dates a jaguar!

Have they bred? That would be some awsome babies.

I'm pretty sure it's genetics. Here's a young Firemouth with brilliant color.

My two Firemouths look almost exactly like that under optimum lighting conditions, and they're only about 2-3 inches each (I've had them since they were 1 inch each). I've really built the Oscar tank around the Firemouths. The left corner of the tank is natural rockwork with plenty of caves for them to hide in. I've used a fine sand substrate so they can "excavate" the sand in search of food and dig around the rocks, and kept the ph at about 7.8. Their main diet consists of Hikari Pellets, along with Oscar grow and Omega One pellets.

It's still possible that your Firemouth will gain superior color as it grows. Maybe it's just a late bloomer :D .
 
Thanks. He has had the split dorsal forever. But he is a scrapper, and dominates the 125 he is in now. As for breeding-- he goes through the motions, and each time the jag lays eggs they seem to get closer to producing but no wrigglers thus far. Maybe I should add a little viagra in :drool:
