The best suggestion is to buy the odd firemouth from different stores at different ages and sizes... why? because you have less of a chance of getting in breeding and better stronger fry and more successful spawnings. Like I say, just pop into the odd aquarium store and keep looking out for individual fish. I have three specimens (one male and two females) all from different bloodlines and ages. I want to get the most idealised Firemouths from my breeding programme and heres a few examples of BIG Firemouths that I aspire towards in different ways.
Amazing Red coverage... My female is close to this and has potential.
Fantastic size (male even has a nuchal hump) and great finage.
Heres another shot of my male... Hes the most feisty Firemouth I've ever owned. I only need to walk in the room and hes got his gill membranes extended.

That's a pretty classic shot right there, nice work. You should get a video up of this guy. My males have always displayed well for females but never very well at me. Congrats on the spawn.
Thanks... I'm setting up a new tank soon to move the other fish into along with Rams and Altum Angels and just keep the Firemouths in this 40 gallon home. The tank mates are slowly polishing off the fry so obviously the parents need their own evironment to raise the young.
