FIREMOUTH Spawning

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice festae ;)

What kind of camera and lens do you have?... it can make a big difference. Also are you familiar with photography and how the tank lighting can affect the colors compared to flashlighting? Ive not altered the colors so get over it :)

Nice meeki. I came close to purchasing a few today but successfully talked myself out of it. I like your idea of buying one here, one there until you have a pair. You don't see people claiming an f# for this species so selective line breeding seems the way to go indeed.
Photo parameters aside, it's obvious that you have a healthy, well cared for, clean looking pair of fish there. Nice job.

Thank bud,

Yeah I want to breed some stunning Firemouths!... My ideal speciman would be big with a heavy splash of red over the head and body so yes this is the start of what I'm hoping will be a great project :)

:lol2::lol2::lol2: Its cool. :) Nice reds in your FM. I have never seen any with the reds popping like that. Congrats on the spawn and good looking FM. :D

Heres the fry from the second batch of fry from this pair (pics taken with a flash this time ).... I might try and catch some of these and rear them on in a seperate tank... What you recon guys? Feesable???

You may have noticed the mouth of my Firemouth looking a bit extended.... well it got worse and to the point it was fully opened. I thought he'd maybe dislocated his mouth and it might settle back... unfortunately it didn't and he died this morning. My theroy is he was so aggressive he kept bashing into things and may have developed an infection or because he couldn't close his jaw properly particles got into his gills and there became an imbalance in his cardiovascular system and his heart just gave out. He was eating yesterday and continued to show aggression and there was not serious swelling anywhere - so the suddeness of his demise suggest heart failure

thats really bad that was anice pair though

sorry to hear that. Did you manage to save any fry so his genes will live on? I have firemouth and they also spawned on the 1st I have the fry in a ten gallon tank with a heater and sponge filter. They seem to be doing ok. Good luck with your project.

Sorry to hear about your male. I've always liked Meeki, and I'm actually looking at setting up my 150 as a Thorichthys tank. I had thought about Affinis this time, but you are making me rethink going with Meeki again.
Good luck!

Thanks guys!

I see it as every cloud has a silver lining and hopefully I'll stock up on some even nicer Firemouths soon... At least I have a fertile female (whom at the moment it courting with my male Thorichthys elioti) that will produce lots of eggs so all I need is a likely medium to large sized male to breed with her :)
