I wasn't really planning on it. I forgot to mention about the aquascape. It would ould probably be rock and driftwood. I know cichlids and plants aren't friends
Depends. The larger ones tend to excavate as far as i have heard.

Maybe a school of other fish such as giant danios, medium barbs or similar can work with a JD, as long as he doesn't target them. I know cichlids vary since the more 'peaceful' 2" salvini almost killed all 3 danios in a 15 since he didn't have the space he wanted. I guess it depends on each fish

My midevil isn't friends with anything in his tank.

That's what I figured. My experience is the fish will let you know. So far, they don't like them.

My next question is... since I've decided on 2 75 gal for now, would refugiums be necessary? I have extra smaller tanks laying around and always liked the idea of a refugium/sump filter. I've also been watching a lot of diy videos lately and want to get more into that part of fishkeeping. I've read that all you need is 10% tank volume, but every video I've seen they use about 25%. I know more is better, but would 10 gal refugiums per tasnk work? or should I go with 20-30 gal tanks as my base?

Thank you all again for the replies!

I forgot to mention that within one of the chambers i was looking to have possibly java fern/moss and cherry shrimp. I don't know if that makes a difference.
