He is speaking from a position of privilege! Most German towns have much easier access to specialty shops like butchers and bakeries than suburban areas in the United States. In the US, most restaurants and supermarkets charge triple, even quadruple, for non-garbage. There is even a website maintained by the US Department of Agriculture that tracks areas of the US where it is impossible to travel by bike or foot to get non-garbage. http://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/food-desert-locator/go-to-the-locator.aspx Those areas are called FOOD DESERTS, so I hope the scorn and disgust get toned down now that I've added this info the conversation!
