First Arowana set up

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have to agreed with all the respones. Wait untill you get big tank then get the aro. Aro in can get any time, give him a big and good home first before you purchage the aro.

IMO I would go 180g or bigger for aro. Aro grow big and fast...5-7 years is way to long like other said 5-7 month will grow big already.

Lots of advise given, but nobody asked what type aro are you planning on getting.

Thats exacly what I was thinking. Jardini being the smallest would still need a tank larger then 150G thow...

This is another question but using a good canister filter means you don't have to change water, right?

no, that is incorrect. waterchanges are mandatory, it doesnt matter what kind of filter you are running. the only way around water changes is if you set up a drip system.

now i don't have any aros but this is my opinion on this if u get a 180 6x2x2 this should be plenty room for a aros for a good couple of years this is why i think that

1. most aros in captivity only get 3 ft (yes three feet is huge BUT how many years will that take if you have a two foot deep tank you can keep a 2 foot aro easly)
2. once you get to a certain size about 125 GAl. your tanks don't get much larger in siz with out a considerable Gal. increse
3. if this is your first aro and it gets to a size that won't fit in a 180 then you can always sell it and get another and start over with the knowledge you have gained on your first
4.A 40 gal is just not enough
5. like it has allready been said money now and money later (in reguards to a bigger tank) you might as well save some money in the long run and get the big one
5. a canister filter should be fine but i would look into 2 FX5s myself if i were to do this

hope this helps and i could be wrong on some thins feel free to correct anything this is only my opinion

I immediately assumed Asian aro which seems like it would be fine in a 180...if it's a silver then the 8'x3' footprint is needed.

as you are in thialand then get a asian aro the tank will need to be alot smaller

a 6x2x2 will be ok for a asian aro and the glass only need to be 10-12mm

sorry for no reply to all the excellent advice.
Yes I will be getting an asian arowana, not sure which yet because some are expensive. the most common you see here is silver but they are big, usuallly about 2 feet. i like golden malaysian but i think they're expensive. Even here.
I will wait because as i said earlier i was choping at the bit, and the eager light bulb light above my head. i'm look at 6x2x2 feet of 5x3x3 feet which with furniture displacment will be 150 gallon of water in the tank. TBH I'll also invest in half in glass just to be on the safe side.
So now i play the waiting game.

how do you do that then? i thought these fish go into shock easily.
sorry if i sound a bit dense but i've never kept fish as big and i hate it when smaller fish i have had have died through miss management.
A link will do mate.
Thanks again.
