first Dat any tips?

Fatten it up and worry about pellet training later. They will take tiny pieces of market shrimps and recommended temp should be 81-83.

Congrats, you're going to love your new Dat I'm sure! At that size if it doesn't take to market shrimp you could also try blood worms. Agreed as FishnCash says regarding water temp, that'll help stimulate his appetite. Our daily tank temps here are about 84 -- arguably not great for the fishes longevity but they sure are hungry mofos lol.

Good luck with him/her and look fwd to some photos.

well the only thing it has eaten is small white cloud minnows. it ignored the black worms, frozen Mysis shrimp, frozen blood worms. thinking of setting up a 10g to house guppys for it.

so after work I'm picking up my first datnoid, a gold dat. it's about the size of a nickel. it'll be in a 55g by itself. any tips or suggestions would be welcome! I've read a bunch on them but like to hear some more first hand experience.

Following. Ive only had one for a week or two and hes stubborn as hell. Will only eat frozen BW and brine shrimp.

Not sure if this was coincidence or it actually helped but after i added a bunch of cheap petco fish the dat stopped hiding and increased it appetite.

I was about to ask this question. So tou think its better to just try with the frozen foods for now and not worry about pellets ? You think theres enough nutrients in BW and BS to make a difference? He wont even touch tilapia or shrimp

Just curious as to what prompted you to get a dat so small,as slowly as they grow?

I added a few corys from my 240 so I could move the bichirs into it. also added a curviceps and think I might get a female so if they breed the Dat will have food!

only one I've seen in years at any lfs. I actually bought 2 but one died the first night. no signs of aggression.
Unh hunh....that was partly why I asked.Although there is no reason why they should as long as tank conditions are optimal some baby fish tend to be a bit delicate and die after a few days after coming home.It is what has caused me to shy away from very young wild caught fish.
