First day as an arowana owner....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Congrats on the new aro and I'm very sorry to hear about your first lil guy. Over the years I have had a couple of aros and made mistakes myself a I'm sure most of us have. Glad you got back to it and didn't give up. Good luck with this new lil guy :) sounds like he is going to have a good home.

Congrats on your new aro! Please do not try to force the aro to eat pellets yet. He is still very small and weak at this point. Continues to offer blood worms and black worm until he's about at least 6-7in before attempting to wean on pellets. I would give him some quarantine feeder guppies, small crickets, and maybe small pieces of frozen shrimp. Good luck on the second one!

That sounds like good advice to me, will probably hold off on 'forcing' pellets til at least January. Thanks!

Don't believe anyone told you to force it on pellets. But good luck breaking it off live foods once you do decide to feed it pellets.

No, no one specifically told me "force it pellets".. however much of what i have read is that most owners prefer their aro's to have a diet where pellet foods are accepted and may take some training to do so..

So, how is he doing now? I've killed baby aros with frozen brine shrimp, Freeze dried krill, and frozen blood worms. Baby crickets seem to be a good food source for 2-4 inch aros. You can feed them a variety of things before you feed them to the aro to vary the diet.

I like your new arowana! Sorry about your first one. If it were mines I would train him on pellets ASAP. Once they get big I haven't had much luck training them on pellets... Even the one I have now which has been eating pellets since I bought him as a baby (I only buy them if they eat pellets/flakes in the store already), can be much more finicky when eating his pellets for a couple days after giving him a treat (frozen foods like Hikari jumbo krill). Needless to say he doesnt get his treat much anymore, if at all. Wait a couple of weeks or a month to make sure he'll be okay then train.

Ive been feeding exactly those things, as well as some baby meal worms, he seems to be doing fine. Sometimes if the piece of food is too big for him, after an initial attempt to eat, he will let it sink and ignore it.

I think any fish can be trained with enough time and patience. Id like him to be on pellets ASAP but him being so young I dont want to force him right now when he needs his food/strength the most for his growing.
