Thats not a bad idea, any sites yould recomend for fresh water sumps? The bulk if the info i find on them is for saltwater.

This site is basicly the best one there is for that info. There's a ton of info in the diy section and this section for how set them up. You can make sumps out of old fish tanks and set them up however you like. Look into bean animal and herbie drains watch a few videos on how they work so you feel comfortable with them. Duel return pumps are a great idea, and should be double the size of your target turnover for head loss. Plumbing will need to be sized appropriately for your target turnover there are charts to figure that out on here as well.

I'll start looking into it my biggest concern is fitting a tank under a low stand, but i guess I could go 30 inches and keep using my step ladder lol. How donyou guys vac these jumbo tanks with tooth filled terror fish ?

Consider setting your sump off to one side of the tank. A side sump takes up more room, but can benefit from simpler plumbing and ease of access/maintenance. Especially if your tank is going to be tall with a low stand.

I think most go bare bottom and keep the detritus suspended with flow. I don't have any large tooth predators so.....but that's how I'd do it.

So, is there a way I could do something like a 4 foot tower wet/dry type system? Or run a pair of 40 or 75g sumps in a rack.

That is what I building... a 4 foot wet/dry (trickle) filter emptying into the sump: https://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/...insula-dirt-bottom-planted-tank-build.714316/

I am also a huge fan of diatomatous earth pool filters for big tanks!

Pothos is fantastic for removing nitrates. You might look into an above tank trickle filter and put the pothos in the top layer.

Definitely. You have an idea of what you're going to make it out of? Finding a container 4' tall like that will probably be the biggest challenge.

VERY true!!! The price of a 10" x 10" x 48" acrylic pedistal is several hundreds of dollars. I have shopped around extensively for one that is affordable. I am going to make my own for my trickle filter.

King of diy did a smaller version out of storage drawers, i may try a play on that. Into a 75gallon i have laying around. I also have some unused rain barrels laying around I could try to figure somthing out with. Maybe them and some 5g buckets into a kind of a swirl filter.
