I just got my first pike, a pair of Crenicichla notophthalmus at the NJAS auction this weekend. Can anyone offer any advice? I tested the bag water and PH was below my test-strip capabilities. My tap water is 7.0 and I don't plan on using R/O so hopefully this will work out allright. Would a 29 be too small for these guys? I have a 55 available but would have to move some fish around to make this work.

first of all congrats, second i dont see the ph being a problem, what i have read is that you need untracable for breeding but i dont see it having a problem living a full long life in 7.0. the 29 should be just fine for one pair. i was reading an article about someone who kept 2 pair in a 60 with minimal damage to each other.

sorry, no pics yet. i totally forgot the bag-photos for mfk! i will get some soon when they are acclimated

Great pikes to start with. I like them. They dont get to large and they play well in the sand box. Do give plenty of hiding spots and dither fish to keep them off each other. Most time as a rule get Three or more fish at a time.

Congrats, I would like to see pics!

Congrats your very lucky there great dwarfs a pair would be good in a 55 i wouldn't put them in a 29 for to long they can get pretty nasty if there a we'll bonded pair it could work but don't count on it

As for the PH they like acidic water so i would try to get it a little lower you could add some driftwood to the tank you don't need it real low just around 6.5 is good they can handle pretty low levels i'm not sure if its Notos but dwarf pikes have been collected in water with a PH close to 4.0

can't wait for pics

These guys hardly ever move. They don't seem interested in pellets; what i put in at night was still there in the morning. I put 20 guppies in with them because I wanted them eating. I was hoping they would also serve as short-term dithers but they still hide all day.

Would they be more active in a 120? I have larger CA/SA in there, I would just be concerned because the pikes might terrorize if they breed. Maybe I just don't have the tank set up to their liking?
