first pike - Crenicichla notophthalmus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hope your new guy is doing well... gorgeous fish.

A nice planted tank with dwarf pikes and apistos would be awesome! I want another tank now.

i just saw this description of notopthalmus on another site:
http://www.aquatic-forums.com/forums/Crenicichla-regani-t4798.html
Males > first few spines on the dorsal are seperated (and appear elongated), in C. regani > all fused together.

Female > shows colour in the caudal and also red halo around dorsal spot is indicative of C. notothalmus.
my male's dorsal is separated. this seems to mean that i have a female regani and a male notopthalmus. is that correct?

I think that cacatuoides would probably be fine with the noto and regani, as long as they are not too small, but you can never really tell. They will probably do better if you provide a territory for each pair on either side of the tank with a break in the middle. if your rock/wood is continuous, one pair may decide that they own all of it and try to dominate the others. Also, some extra dithers in there for a bit of distraction may help if you have problems.

It looks like you have a regani female and the male is hard to tell from the pictures. they look very very similar at that size except for the dorsal. here is a shot of my male noto (pissed!). the first few rays are very separate from the rest.

Deffinately a regani female. The male would have to see the dorsal fin extended. Regani are seperated as well, they just aren't extended like the pic just above this post.

My dwarves will go for tetras too big to swallow whole, if they can fit the head in their mouths. Dwarf pikes in nature feed on apisto fry, so as long as you don't plan on raising up the apisto fry, should make fine tankmates. I have kept them with both dwarf acaras and both colombian and african rams with no issues.

Looking good! Why is it so fat though?

because it just ate. lol. nice looking noto. i cant wait for mine to get bigger. also gorgeous tank

what is NJAS and where and when is it?
north jersey aquarium society - njas.net. I dont know where you're from, but you should look in to any local society auctions or meetings; they are a great place to pick up fish that a LFS may not usually carry.
