Fyi I've had the tank over 5 years. That jag is about 8 years old in his third tank. The pleco and JD are original too and about 4 years I've had them. I've never done large water changes and never more than once a week. I know I need more and will do.

Sorry if it seemed like I was attacking you(especially since it was your 1st post). I'm glad that you'll be doing more wc's.

got to love the terrible towel background

This is why I signed on. I have been consistent but learning I'm still not doing enough. Even if things have been fine. I do have a problem with my nitrates and will gradually increase my water changes... ( amounts and how often).

Any pics of the red terror? Are talking festae or Mayan cichlid? And definitely at least 50-70 % wc a week. An try to do a thorough gravel vac at the same time. I'm sure there's a lot of waste and leftover food that will affect the water quality.

Good job with your progress!

I'm not about to get further on your case, i just wanted to point out that if that jag had 50% water changes his entire 8 years, he would be atleast 16"+ now, same goes for your other fish. Nitrates are the #1 factor in fish's growth, gotta keep them preferably around 10, but 20 is acceptable aswell.

Welcome. Looks good love the stock. I bet your having HIGH nitrate problems. Check out purigen.
It works great. Or plants or algae scrubber

I just out in pura complete. Know anything about it? I took out all my fake plants and added all live plants and cpl more driftwood about 4 months ago. my friend went salt and gave me all that. Obviously my fish rip up the plants but the ones on the wood are holding strong. Good find. I use the magnet scrubber for the algae on the walls.
