Well for your 180 there are a couple i recommend. I tend to like in sump skimmers more than HOB's but here it goes.....

Octopus reef skimmers --- amazing
Corallife skimmers- they are okay but you can get the 220gallon rated one and it will to amazing
marineland skimmers-- get the 300gall skimmer for 200 off ebay, i personally use this one and threw away a trigger system for this one. Its very underated.

I would search ebay for any of these and use them on your 180

yea ro unit on the tank would mess up a salt tank. A ro unit connected to a ATS system with resivor could be created some how but in your case, no. The ro system should be connected to an outside water source and stored into bucked or resivor tank. Then you use for top offs and water changes. Fresh water for top offs, and mix salt in seperate bucket for water changes.

so i understand a protien skimmer will remove all kinds of crap and significantly increase time between water changes. Say nitrates and phosphates could be kept very low could i go 3 to 4 months without a water change? what other deadly chemicals build up in the water if any?

none really but your trace elements begin to deplete, making water changes a good idea any longer than 2 months.
