ya the lfs wants $250 and its not that im sold on it, its just that its the only light fixture ive been told will work for anenomies, so i have nothing to compare it to. so one other thing, live rock. my lfs is charging 10.99 a pound, and im under the impression i need a pound of live rock per gallon, so do i really need to spend over $1000 dollars on rock to fill my 90G
1lb of LR per gallon is fine, but 10.99 is nuts. I wouldnt pay more then 3 bucks per lb. Look on craigslist and find someone who is getting out of the hobby. I see it for 3-4 bucks a lb all the time on CL.

You can also buy some LR and mix it with dead base rock, and save some money that way too.

yah problem is we only have 1 salt water supplier in the city, so theres no competition, is it a hassle to order LR online?

Just be careful about ordering from people that are leaving the hobby. Some of these people had HORRENDOUS problems with their tank, and may have medicated with god knows what tainting the rock...ect...ect.

That being said LED technology is on the market NOW to grow anything you want as good as, or better than MH. Check reef2reef or reefcentral if you dont believe me. Its also better color-wise in my opinion.

Its a hassle only if you dont want to wait. Mail ordered live rock will be packed "damp" and will experience some die off, but so long as this is a fresh start and you dont have any inhabitants, its ok to shove it right in the tank.

thats awesome to hear, thats what my lfs told me about the LED lights, i just wanted to double check, and as for the live rock i might have to travel to a near by city possibly to check for better pricing. so is it ok to include base rock in my 90 LBS like for example. lets just say 50 pounds LR and 40 pounds base. is that ok? or what percentage would you go if it wasent to be 100% all LR?

Guess it really depends on how quickly you want your tank to colonize with bacteria. I would do about 10-11 lbs of live rock and then do the rest dead and put up with a little longer cycle time, but I am also cheap :D.

You dont need much live if you are going with lace or base rock. The live is the absolute best, and there is no replacement for it. But lace and base has the same bacteria...its just not as pretty and not colonized for as long.

If you are going do dead rock make sure you have enough bio in your filtration to compensate. Then when your rock does finally convert 3-6 months with base/lace rock you will have one hell of a filtered tank ;)

so any spacific bio you recomend for the filter or can i use the same stuff that a person would use for a FW tank, and so basically the more LR i have in my tank verses base rock means that the tank will cycle faster. well thanks to every one who has helped with the info. im pretty sure ive got enough info now to get the tank going properly

Always keep asking questions. More opinions is always better.

That being said, you can pretty much use whatever bio material you want. The sintered glass tubes work pretty awesome. Like the eheim stuff
