First trip to a real LFS

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Which store are you going to? So far, I've been pretty disappointed with the FW offerings in the Triangle area. It's depressing, but I feel like Petsmart/Petco usually have better selection than a lot of the "real" LFS around here. Since moving down here, most of my fish purchases have involved either shipping or really long road trips. I hope you have better luck. Let us know how the store is and try to take some pictures.

I'd think the Del would be around $50, I have yet to see a Del around me but an ornate is around $40 and del's are a little more.

I'll definitely let you know, it's in Wake Forest I think it's called aquarium outfitters or something like that

Well guys, it was a great trip, and what kind of MFK would I be if I came back fishless???

I picked up a great looking energetic young delhezi thats a little over 2" for $39, he's currently acclimating - i'm a bit worried because my 2 sens are about 5" each but I went ahead and fed them a TON before starting to acclimate him.. i didn't realize the size difference until I put him in the tank.. If they show any sign of wanting to eat him im gonna have to act quick.. I could probably put the 2 of them in to my 75 gallon with the oscar, they're about the same length he is, but we'll see

Also picked up 2 cories (idk what kind) b/c the girlfriend thought they were cute

Sounds cool, take some pictures. Watch those bichirs!
I suggest you buy some more corys, they are social and do best in groups. Try to get at least 6. They are more active and have some great behaviors when kept in a proper sized group. Do you have sand? They love sand and flow. If you post a picture, I can ID them for you too.

If your worried about the dels size I've found a cheap way to let a fish grow-out abit in a tank is to use those net breeders designed for livebearers. add a small fake plant so the fish feels safe. and let it bulk-up abit. The del would be able to breach and kept relatively safe from the sens( as long as they don't try and crawl up and over! >.< I put nothing past a poly!) Though a tank divider is imo the best option. Unfortunately I lost an Aba Aba knife that was 2x the size of my TSN because I "thought" he couldn't eat it. When in doubt... follow your gut.

Already had 5 emeralds when I bought these guys, and I think he called them short tails or sword tails or something like that, and yeah they're on sand :P

So far there have been no problems, I guess the Del is about half the length of the 2 sens, he's the same length of the rainbow shark who's been in there for a couple weeks and they haven't as much as given him a second look yet - my only concern with the breeder net is that it would be really easy for him to jump out of the tank entirely, wouldn't it? - I'll look for a tank divider but my tank is an awkward size cuz its 3' long 2' high and 1' wide, im thinking that height will make it difficult to find one the right size

Honestly so far, the sens are more afraid of the delhezi than he is of them. One got kinda close, I cringed a bit, and the del actually bit the sen on the nose a bit, sending the sen to the other side of the tank freaking out - The only live feeders I give my sens are ghost shrimp and they often struggle to fit those guys in their mouth, so im 50/50 on what i should do - i don't THINK they will but I guess you never know. I'll definitely get some pictures up when my girlfriend brings her camera over

Actually, the Del is LONGER than the rainbow shark and they haven't shown any interest in him, what do you guys think?
