nothing ever dies (in that tank at least) they just seem to breath hard and the airstone made a difference its also my understanding that an airstone isnt so great in a planted tank

It may be allowing more oxygen to be absorbed but in a normal circumstance where some other "thing" is not displacing the oxygen in the water it would not be needed.
