If the dominant one is also dark, how will removing it help? lol

Post a pic of tank & fish, this is pretty much a big guessing game otherwise.

Having said that, dark substrate, dark background, typically equates to young fish being dark. Especially in a fairly bare tank, such as yours. It's a survival instinct.

Yes, they’re all really dark

How long have you had the juvenile Jaguar Cichlids? Like stated from above it can be more than just the substrate.

I’ve had them 3-4 months now.

If the dom fish is also dark, and as you say all tank parameters are good, then most likely what I originally stated. Hendre posted a good example of how fish will attempt to blend in with their environment.

Guess you have to change the background or substrate and see if things improve...

Background can stay, but you need some natural gravel, or pool filter sand.
