Fish coloration

Background color can and will make a difference too, but chockfull is correct, the substrate will generally have a greater overall effect on color. Change the black sand to a lighter color in this tank, and the fish will begin to lighten up within hours.

So I’m going to buy some natural looking, brownish substrate. Do you or anyone else know where I can get some cheat, safe natural looking substrate? I prefer sand or small rocks.

Sorry not trying to hi-jack your thread but i have 7 gold barred F1 midas from rapps i also have black gravel and black back ground and mine are mostly dark also except when they do there mating dance. My question is, is it stressfull for them to keep black gravel or are they fine blending in
