sorry if this is in the wrong fourm, but this topic is an "idea".Heres the story,i have retired from my job and have come upon the idea of fish farms.I have the land, money, and time to build one.Has anyone had a fish farm before or still have one? What would the size need to be?To give an idea,i am planning on raising walleye,LMB,SMB,oarfish(yes im aware that they can grow 20 feet)and many more to come. But do u MFKers think its worth a shot:confused:

Congratulations on this endeavor.

We are the largest Tropical fish farming area in the U.S. (Tampa bay area, Miami being next).

Now for the questions :D.

Is this to be a non-profit project?

Skills (other than being able to sign checks), knowledge of business, fish (and illness'), water chemistry, botany, working with concrete etc.

How much land do you have to dedicate to this project?

Check out the pix... http://www.floridafishfarms.com/

How high is your land and how low is the water table. (Looking for flood conditions and a water source good).

Wouldn't happen to have a free flowing artesian well would you?

Are you considering in ground or above ground(concrete/plastic/fiberglass/liner) ponds?

Enclosures (barns or other out buildings)?

Equipment (earth moving type or are you going to have ponds dug? (more fun to DIY)).

Electricity...are you close enough to the grid to get 440v power easily?

There are several companies that make fish farms-to-go (for Universities and 3rd world countries). In cases like yours, you don't want to reinvent the wheel.

If this is a for profit project I do have a suggestion for you... "Caviar", Mote Marine (a local commercial research company) started raising sturgeon for this money maker. Interesting project.

Maybe I'll do a chiclid breeding ponds.Maybe try to re-create some of there natural habitats.Maybe setup in an indoor breeding pond for rays.Thats what im goning to do.Setup a pond indoors for rays!!!And SOME native fish.

Need help ? LOL
Really

I love my tanks but long for more.
I wish I had the money.

I would read DrJoe's post carefully,He is wise.
His links were great to read/see. Make you stop and think.

I think RAYS are a wonderful idea, would wonder about the market here.
Many people around me only have small tanks.
You have to have BIG tanks for rays.
Always could ship them =.......$$$$$$$$$$

you have to raise large amounts of fish to make a profit.

I love the Idea of having a Local Warehouse size fish breeder near by me.
All I have is Jack's aquarium,Poopsmart,wallyworld(walmart)..
none are fish alone stores.:irked:

Ohhhh.........Grrrrrrrrrrrrr Baby spilled my pop...........
Got to go :screwy: KIDS MUST KILL

also in ohio...if u need any input, help, or ideas, pm me...i'm more than willing to help ya out. i'm not sure what u'r fishkeeping skill level is but maybe i could be of use.

Theres a place in CT where I get my bait from to feed my bass. He has 3 man-made ponds and somehow bass got into them. Always during July and August there are little largemouth bass in the bait tank ranging from 2 inches to 5 inches. I grabbed about 6 of of them and I am rasing them in my 30 gallon.

I have been daydreaming of building a large coldwater pond out back and growing Stellate Sturgeon, harvesting the caviar, and using the money to pay for my tropicals and a KICK ARSE REEF TANK!!!! Was never sure if it could be made to work as I knew they are difficult to get to spawn, and some of the conservation programs in the black sea were struggling! It would be cool to get your hobby to pay for itself! Well, I'll read those links with interest...

Good luck with the farm, dude...

I have to say, you americans...your ace. Sturgeon are COLD WATER FISH...they like COLD WATER... Your in FLORIDA....ITS HOT....BAD PLACE TO FARM COLD WATER FISH... will you listen...no...and have you managed to farm sturgeon...YES....Is there a lesson for the rest of us there...YES. Just get on with it....

Mote are farming sturgeon for meat too? Does it taste good?

You could find a niche in the hobby in Ohio where one does not currently exist and become an exclusive distributor to your local fish stores. Rays would be a great avenue to look into. If stores could get quality specimens without having to ship them across the globe or pay middle men, it might be in their interest to do so. Obviously you would need to have a healthy breeding colony underway before you could begin to make money and it may never pay (monitarily) in such a way so as to cover the initial investment.

It would be awesome if you made an indoor pond and raised monster fishes like wels catfish, paroon sharks, nile perch, mekong stingray, piraiba, siamese giant carp, etc!! It would be a fun hobby!!!

Or what about opening up a online store selling exotic freshwater fish?
