Fish farm

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
something like raising brook trout might be viable since youre back east if you get government agencies lined up to buy them from you. i find it crazy that we in CO are killing brookies while back east their populations are starting to dwindle.

we (CO DOW) buy a ton of RBT every year from NE and SD and also buy CCF and TGM as well as some others.

good luck if you decide to go for it. youre going to need A LOT of money to start it up.

I have an idea for you: Move to Mexico, land over there is cheap. Set up a asian aro. farm, the weather in Mex. is just like Indo, Malay, Singapore. And then set up field trips for people from U.S. (most ly from Cali). And you can help increase asian aro population too, then when the U.S. lift the ban (partly b/c of what you're doing) , you are right there, across the border, shipping xbacks back to the us, voila.:headbang2. Anyway, your farm need to have a little bed and breakfast for us to stay a few days, we need to see you feed the aros :nilly::popcorn::drool::screwy:

As for the saltwater prices above. The corals are do-able, but some of those fish have never been bred in captivity to my knowledge.
For the cost of a saltwater system, if you want a display tank it will cost you a fortune (UV, sump, big glass tank, pumps, skimmer). However, I know of at least one dealer who successfully breeds at least three types of sharks using only under gravel filtration and cheato (with copious live rock and sand and low stocking levels). You'd be surprised what you can do on a budget. They have huge ponds that look like livestock feeders or something similar. Can't be that expensive.....

Congratulations on this endeavor.

We are the largest Tropical fish farming area in the U.S. (Tampa bay area, Miami being next).

Now for the questions :D.

Is this to be a non-profit project?

Skills (other than being able to sign checks), knowledge of business, fish (and illness'), water chemistry, botany, working with concrete etc.

How much land do you have to dedicate to this project?

Check out the pix... http://www.floridafishfarms.com/

How high is your land and how low is the water table. (Looking for flood conditions and a water source good).

Wouldn't happen to have a free flowing artesian well would you?

Are you considering in ground or above ground(concrete/plastic/fiberglass/liner) ponds?

Enclosures (barns or other out buildings)?

Equipment (earth moving type or are you going to have ponds dug? (more fun to DIY)).

Electricity...are you close enough to the grid to get 440v power easily?

There are several companies that make fish farms-to-go (for Universities and 3rd world countries). In cases like yours, you don't want to reinvent the wheel.

If this is a for profit project I do have a suggestion for you... "Caviar", Mote Marine (a local commercial research company) started raising sturgeon for this money maker. Interesting project.
