Well, I had another thread but got tired of people telling me to get natives :irked:

Alrighty, well heres whats up.
I'm setting up a 120 gallon for my BIO majors project.
I want to do a SA/CA tank.
Complete with cichlids and bottom feeders.

This will be the fish's permament home and they must be low-maintance.
The tank has a UFG, lights, gravel, plants, decor and some other stuff.
I have a onetime fund of 250 dollars at my LFS so i must know what i want.
[i think i have everything i need, so i can just use that on livestock/plants :headbang2 ]

I want to get some colorful cichlids.
and a few bottom feeders.
i was thinking of a silver aro but it'll prob. get to big for this tank :/
i really dont want cons because they get crazy when they breed.
heres a list of some stuff i thought would look cool.
can anyone help me make a list of fish to get?

Thorichthys meeki [firemouth]
Herichthys carpinte [texas cichlid]
Heros severus [severum]
Herotilapia multispinosa [Rainbow Cichlid]
Nandopsis octofasciatum [jack dep]
Astronotus ocellatus [oscar]
Cichlia ocellaris [pbass]
Aequidens rivulatus [green terror]
Cichlasoma festivum [festivum]
Uara amphiacanthoides [Uaru]
Cichlasoma facetum [Chameleon cichlid]
Archocentrus sajica [T-Bar Cichlid]

then i was thinking some misc fish to mix up the cichlids

Pimelodus pictus [pictus cat]
Sorubim lima [Lima shovelnose]
Arius jordani [Black Fin Shark]

i really donno what im gonna do.
what do you guys think?
what species ect?

no. lol

thats just a list of fish i like.
i want to subtract, add, and how many of them.

well, since I have to buy everything at one time, i would assume it has to be at once.
I'll cycle the tank with my own fish...
maybe i can set up temp tanks until they are all acclimalated.

but i need to know what species to add to this tank.

Well, you want low maint., so no Pbass to large anyways. Personally I would go with Fire mouths, cories, and possibly pictus. Most of the fish on your list have higher maint because of size, water quality requirements, and amount of food required. You could also use larger tetras with the firemouths. Also fire mouths could breed enough to sustain themselves;)

Yeah. Firemouths sound pretty good.
Ill possibly get a pair of those.

No corys. They'll get munched and I really dont want to have anything under 2" in there unless they're fry.

im thinking of fish 5-10"

Cichlia ocellaris will need a much bigger tank than that. much bigger!

stop telling him stuff he dosent wana hear...

if i was you i would mix it up a little bit.
try some
fire mouths
jack dep
the lima will get just big enough for the tank and probably wont outgrow it.
maybe some royal plecos or something.
possibly a oscar

idk its kinda hard i dont know much about chichlids.
all i know is if i made my 120gallon into a chichlid tank i would go all out
chichlids like 20-30 in the tank. have like yellowlabs and crab

colors would be cool it would be freshwater but look like sw
have yellows and blues and greens and pink and crap.

haha thanks man.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. People love colorful fish, but I thought a SA/Ca would be easier to take care of then a african setup.

how big do royals get?

They are slow growers they grow like maybe 1" every 2 months or so.. probably slower. my friend has a 4" that hes had for like 5 months and its 6" so no clue.. but they can like 10" + i think

Yea just pick a couple out on your list and if they fight remove the one thats bossing them around and send it to me lmao :) or try and exchange it for a diff fish.

Oscars though are like underwater dogs and they are cool as hell
