Fish for 36 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
A leopard leaf fish needs 55 gallons, but I think that the South American types can go in less.

Red wolf is a squeeze for a 36, but it was recommended for me when I was stocking my 36. I wound up opting for the puffers for activity.
Marximus Marximus kno4te kno4te J Joshuakahan all have experience, among others here.
One of the big things is that they jump, so you would want to cover that lid.
Deadeye Deadeye is right red wolf is kinda a squeeze in a 36g...they do get 9-10”.. but if ur set on a red wolf then go for it. upgrading to a 40b be in like 2 years is not as expensive since petco always have dollar per gallon Especially if u fall inlove with it…its not good to get a fish u dont really want..lol…puffer is a good choice but personally the fun puffers are the bigger species like fahakas or mbu if ur looking for a predator.. may i suggest looking into serras? A solo sanchezi piranha will be good in a 36g.. they get to only 6-7“ but depends if its legal in ur state.

I can’t have piranha we’re in at. I have also seen archer fish in freashwater and they are pretty cool.

You should not go based on size. Size is a factor for sure, but attitude and movement is a big one. I think all suggestions would probably be tight, if not unfair for the fish. 36g is not a large tank, but not a small one at that. Perhaps consider a solo oddball. Here would be my suggestions:

- Some kind of spiny eel
- Hairy Puffer
- Some kind of Freshwater Sculpin or Darter
- African Butterflyfish
- Group of pea puffers
- Hogchoker
