I would suggest any of the mid size pike cichlids, great colours, savage temperaments and feeds very aggressively... I love them, but only if your a cichlids man and want something a little different.

I would never put anything larger than a 5.5" species in a 55 gal, to me even a JD would out grow that tank in a year, males easily reach 10" if taken care of properly.
It depends on the activity levels of the fish, a wolf fish/birchir etc would be fine even quite large in a 55 but say a pike cichlids or freshwater barracuda then no.

I just got a 55 gallon rectangular aquarium and I am considering making it a more aggressive tank. i am definitely looking into getting an EBJD and I was hoping to get some of your input on what tank mates he could have (if any). A personal favorite of mine would be an oscar, but please correct me if I'm wrong. I am also looking into an upgrade as for my tank, so if I were to have both of them, how much would you recommend upgrading. Thank You

A slight planted tank solo Red Wolf is cool, Red wolf barely get over 8 inches and took years for it to reach that size. I would take this wolf over a JD anytime(this wolf is from a member in different forum)View attachment 1204684

I don't think there is a sub forum for wolves but you can find some good information and thread about them it under "other characin" or "mini monster" section.
Oscar need 75 gallons minimum,if u want a awesome tank get 1 Christmas fulu, a few mascara barbs(or Odessa barbs) and a weatherloach.
It's the curse of the 55, I have 5 of them thanks to the $1 per gallon sales.6' tank for an oscar/jd combo and still no guarantee it would work out. Angelfish, severums, jewel cichlids, salvini, or firemouths for med sized commonly available fish in a 55 gallon. Tank mates would depend on the species.
