  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This thread got crazy real quick. The kid is 3. If she liked the goldfish then go to the lfs and let her pick a fancy goldfish out give it a name and call it a day.

Perhaps she would enjoy some of those glowing zebra danios? The genetically modified ones with the jellyfish gene that makes them blue, purple, orange, and green?

I setup an aquarium for my daughter when she was 5 and the glo-fish I put in it kept her interested for several months (pretty good for a 5 year old). Now that she's 10 the only time she even looks in one of my aquariums is when there are new fry in the tank. I would suggest a small group of Guppies for a 10g tank because they will provide instant color and eventually fry for her to get excited about. And usually not a very long wait for the fry. If you don't want to deal with getting rid of guppies as they multiply, I think a small group of glo-fish would be a great choice.

There are varieties that only grow up to 5 inches. One of them would be fine for a ten gallon. It's just a goldfish.
Incorrect, a goldfish would be awful for a 10 gallon and I’m suprised you thought it would be good. The sheer amount of waste they produce disqualifies them for a 10 gallon and when you add in the size they get they should never even be consider in a passing thought as a potential fish for a 10 gallon.

“It’s just a goldfish” tell that to hard core goldfish keepers and see what they say.

To put it bluntly op, ignore the advice just given to you and do not consider a goldfish for a 10 gallon.
