how many of ya'll out there actually think to your self that you are going to keep the fish u just bought for the rest of its life or u think when it gets too big i will sell it

When i buy a fish, i intend to keep it for as long as it lives... considering that especially in a place like Hong Kong... large fish are hard to sell, and its even less likely the people buying them plan on caring for them properly...

This doesn't take some things into account... I have several species where I have bought a group of juvi fish to try to get a pair. Once a pair forms, the other fish will be rehomed to another hobbyist or the LFS. Also, you can never say if a group of aggressive fish will work long term... Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't. Depends on individual temperament and other factors.
In general, I don't buy fish that I know will be entirely too large to keep in any of my tanks for life within a reasonable amount of time. Some species may require an upgrade at some point, but I don't go out and buy a silver arowana or something if I know damn well I have no plans on buying a 300 gallon plus within the year.

you might not. but i am sure there are people out there that do this, and they even admit to it in some of their posts. you can't really believe that every person that has bought a RTC or Pacu or other large fish really plan to accommodate it for life (when i say really plan they understand how big these fish will eventually get and understand the care requirement for the fish)

Definitely. Not even just size issues, but many people keep species together that shouldnt be IMO due to compatibility issues. I understand people may want to keep a general community tank with species from different parts of the world, and if care is taken with choosing the stock, that is completely fine. But all too often people throw a bunch of species with vastly different requirements, temperaments, and preferences without even considering the fish.

I think there is a reason why this forum is called MonsterfishKEEPERS instead of MonsterfishRENTERS

your right but you can't tell me you haven't read on multiple occasions "need to rehome my ________(fill in a fish) because it has out grown my tank" or something of the same meaning on this forum

I think most of the time when that happens its because these people bought the fish before they researched and decided to just keep it till it got too big...

Then there are others who take in fish from people who may have kept said fish in a tiny tank and now they just want to give them a chance to live a better life till they can find them a new and suitable permanent home...

Not to mention there are people who just remember wrong measurements of adult fish size or hear bad info on sizes only discover much later on that said fish will outgrow their tank...

So all in all, i think maybe it would help if you were to re-word the original post to make it more clear as to what you mean by fish for life?

I think we all probably made some mistakes early in the hobby. This hobby takes a lot of research to do well (and thats part of the appeal of it for me now) and most LFSs are just trying to sell fish. I never made any big errors with stocking when I first started but definitely did some stupid stuff in regards to care.
