I think we all probably made some mistakes early in the hobby. This hobby takes a lot of research to do well (and thats part of the appeal of it for me now) and most LFSs are just trying to sell fish.
I used to be this stupid kid who thought fishkeeping was just pouring water into a tank and dumping the fish inside. No filtration, no water conditioner. I never knew why they died in a day or two and just assumed they were sick. God knows how many fish died because of my stupidity.

Well for the most part I plan to keep the fish for life, however if I have an aggressive fish that doesn't get a long and have no alternative tanks for it then that's when I look for a new home for the fish. Otherwise its fish for life.
I have done both, but I think that it is important to think about the likelihood of the fish getting what it needs after you sell it.
Very few people no matter what can house some of the fish on this site. If you buy an RTC, please either have a good home lined up, or be prepared to build that pond.
I can buy a saltwater fish, and when it gets too large or aggressive for my reef I can take it in and it will be sold in minutes. Most of them can be housed in tanks less than 200g.
Just always make sure that you are being realistic when you trade a fish back to the lfs.
I have from the start been fish for life i have gradually grown out of a 20 gallon tank to now haveing a one hundred gallon tank and will continue to get larger tanks untill i just build my dream tank (my tank i can get in and swim in with my fishes lol)
the one good excuse for buying fish that get big is that u will then need a bigger tank but u need to be able to get that bigger tank not just dream about it thats my opinion right now i have 4 small dats and 4 small frontosas in a 120 but i do have funds and am saving up to build a big 500-800 (want to do the biggest sizes possible in that range but with standard wood sizes so that there is hardly any waste) gallon ply wood in a couple years or earlier if needed
