Hey guys, I am at college now. According to the policy about pets for my University, fish are the only pets allowed (YES!). However, they are to be kept in a tank no larger than 5 gallons, and heaters/filters are not permitted as they can pose a fire hazard. While I do not necessarily agree with that policy, I still want to obey the rules and keep a fish in my room. I have a 5 gallon tank at home that I am planning on bringing back with me to my room next time I go home.

So, the question is, what recommendations do you guys have for what fish I should put in it. Keep in mind that my room temperature is about 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and no heaters or filters are permitted. Another question is, should I even keep a fish? Without a filter I know I would have to do frequent water changes, which I am willing to do. Are there species of fish ideal for my setup? Any suggestions welcome.

I would guess you could get away with running an air pump, so you could run a small sponge filter.

Gold fish, they really are not a bad fish at all, plus one on air pump with filter

least killifish maybe. We did alot of crafty things in college to get around the rules and accomplish what we wanted. Think about unique ways to heat the tank. One way would be to try to heat the tank in other ways, such as tapping into heat sources, such as the coils to a mini fridge. College is the time to experiement, get creative

Considering the size and temps, how about a small planted shrimp tank?

Youd prob be fine with a 10 gallon ;)

At my school, the rule is 10 gallons, but I live in a frat so no one can say anything to me about my 65 and my 90. My girlfriend lives in the dorms though so to compinsate for the 10 gallon rule, we set up a 55 gallon African tank :D

I think you should try and go bigger. And also try and hide filter tubes and a heater by using PVC in the tank. Just make sure you do your reaserch in order to have proper flow for the heater to avoid burnouts. Just hide it for room inspections if anything.
