if Mayan is False terror, then Red terrors are false Mayans..

They are different fishes.. U are false if you got the wrong fish.

Bad name for the poor Mayans

too bad the thread got a little off-track . . . I agree that it's a Mayan, and I also agree that it's ok to call them "false red terrors", since some LFS will try to pass them off as the real deal

bottom line is, most people who are looking for RTs are looking for a. festae . . . so if an LFS sells a c. uropthalmus as an RT, that is "false"

and I also agree, if you buy the wrong RT, that is on you, not the LFS . . . the LFS is in the business of selling fish, and common names are just marketing tools . . . caveat emptor

Who's they? THE MAN? Is it the great red terror cover up?

So fish stores were trying to sell uros as festae by labeling them red terror, then "they" caught on and started calling them false red terrors, then the fish stores, to really try to stick it to the customer started labeling mayans as false red terrors to not pawn them off as red terrors?

It's so simple! Why didn't I see it before! :screwy:

I don't think any LFS would seel Mayans as "false red terrors" . . .

the way this works is, the LFS sells Mayans as "red terrors", and the person who buys it feels screwed, because it was "false", based on the convention that a. festae = red terror . . . Mayans are generally less desirable than festaes

the "false" is added by the fish-buying community, not the LFS . . .

Ive seen mayans listed as "false" red terrors in LFS for years...since 2003 at least. I think like modest_man said, its different in different places.

I was one who was burned by the "False Festae". This was completely my fault because at the time I was only looking for the name Red Terror. After purchasing three Mayans I started looking for the specific name of Festae. But that didn't exactly make things any easier. The best way I found to purchase Festae was to study pictures and profiles of the fish that I wanted. Then at various LFS I could use an eductaed judgement based upon scientific name and visual evidence. I was also told by a LFS that labels by common names only that Mayans are sold as Red Terrors because for many years they have been bred at Florida farms as Red Terrors. Many LFS name their stock on the title provided by their supplier. The best LFS that I frequent only labels by Scientific names. He has had a reputable establishment for over 30 years. The combination of his knowledge, his labeling system and my own education makes buying from him very rewarding. Sell your fish as a Mayan. It's no big deal. There are many people who would buy it. You may not be able to demand the same price as a Festae of that size but at least you won't be selling something under false pretenses. Good luck with your sale.

ok, fair enough . . . seems a bizarre marketing technique, but at least it's honest :)

thanks
