Fish ID?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ive caught green sunfish under an inch and the look nothing like the fish in question, the rays are still the same but maybe that was a dominant green trait in the hybrid

Are you really that obtuse? Again you have people who know what they are talking about... and you still don't believe them! You should really pick up a few GOOD books. Some of these folks travel the country sampling fish and have permits that require them to be able to ID fish. If we go by what you are saying, 95% of the fish out there are hybrids.

i hope these guys dont ID fish near me

To parrot or affirm what others have said about "Fishes of" state books...you really cannot go wrong with them. Naturally some are better than others (you might want to ask here before you buy). Fishes of Tennessee is an outstanding book (so is Fishes of VA). Anyone east of the Mississippi River should own fishes of TN.

MT, I'm not clear on what you're getting at but your fish does not exhibit hybrid characteristics. You might try the local library for an ID book. If they don't have one handy, you can get any book you want on loan.

i live in wisconsin...what fishes of book would anyone recommend?

I would advise starting with freshwater fishes of north America as mentioned previously. I don't believe Wisconsin has a current book (but I very well could be wrong). Wisconsin does have a pretty good online pictorial key though (but the online key is no substitute for books).

The Fishes of Illinois by Philip W. Smith is getting old but it's still a good reference, and it should cover most Wisconsin species.

i agree that online pix isnt a good substitute for a book description....pictures make a person rely too much on color. and color can be so deceiving. thanx for the info...i'm gonna go check amazon LOL

CS- no problem!

You're probably just going to come up with another excuse to not admit you were wrong, but here's a picture of a juvenile green sunfish, from a guy who's breeding them: http://forum.nanfa.org/uploads/monthly_01_2009/post-153-1231603465.jpg

Seriously, several of the people you're arguing fish IDs with are professional ichthyologists who are vastly more knowledgeable and experienced than you are. You have a great opportunity to learn from them, but you're wasting it by insisting that you're right in the face of all evidence to the contrary. I'm not saying you shouldn't voice your opinion, but to tell other much more knowledgable people that they don't know what they're talking about is ridiculous.
