I don't like flowerhorns, they are overpriced, especially for the babies that you don't know what they'll end up looking like. A 2" costs $20 around here and a 3" $30. I'm thinking about going to my favorite lfs and seeing if they have any larger oscars that need a home, I think that'd be nice. Last time I was in there they cost around $30 for a 8"+ oscar (all priced the same). Does that sound like a fair price? I may do the same with a GT or two if I find a good deal.

The Oscar sounds like a good buy. Around here in central CA 8 inch would go for 45ish.

Also a pair of GT's would be "Okay" for the fish to have great water once they reach the 5inch mark it would be requiring 2 water changes a week.

Also, which fish are you unfimilair with? I can be off help. Pm'ed you.

The grammode and mota. I know I don't want to devote my life to water changes so that's a major deciding factor. My husband wants some red severums for the 55. My lfs has had them in lately and they are gorgeous but at $15 a pop for a 2" one I'm hesitant.
I'm glad to hear that my lfs is selling larger oscars for a reasonable price. I may just have to stop in there today!

I got my oscar! I went to my lfs and they only had two large oscars and one was more than I wanted to spend and the other was in pretty bad shape (HITH and a messed up jaw). I ended up getting a 4 inch albino one. He's still getting used to the tank so I'm gonna wait to take pictures. Hopefully he'll be comfortable enough in there for me to take some pics tomorrow. The 55 is still empty but I'm satisfied with him for now.

Here's my new oscar! :grinno:

great choice!

i hope that you will enjoy keeping an oscar
i sure do!

Thanks! I know I'll love the little guy, what's not to love! I can't wait for him to start coming up to the glass when I walk up instead of hiding.
Thanks for all the advice everyone!

Well, I've noticed my lil' guy has a messed up jaw, kinda crooked. Do you think that'll affect his quality of life? I put in some feeders (I quarantined them!) and he was able to eat them. He also eats pellets and frozen bloodworms/brine shrimp just fine. I'm just wondering if anyone else has one like that and if they still ended up growing full size/stayed healthy. What causes that, is it a birth defect? I really didn't notice it until I had him about a week, maybe it is more noticable because he's grown a bit?
