I've heard alot of fish stores and fish keepers alike say a fish will only get as large as their aquariums will allow. Is this true it doesn't make sense to me if so why?

usually it will stunt a fish whick will make them die real fast but i personally belive that goldfish grow to the size of their environment cuz ive seen 25 year old 3 inch goldfish

Isn't this rather contradictory? Where did you see this 25-yr old 3" goldfish?

youtube lol i wouldnt suggest putting a golfish in a 5 gal bowl though they still deserve proper care

Garbage... :irked: Thats called stunting and NO fish will survive as long as it normally would when subjected to this even goldfish.

My point is anyone can claim without giving proof that the fish actually lived for 25 years despite the stunted growth. It's hard to believe a stunted fish live that long, let alone accidents that could have killed it or the rising nitrates and then sudden changes in its environment which could have killed it in the process just like other fish. Link please, Harlan? What strain of goldfish was this?

wikipedia says the oldest one was 49 but i agree they wouldnt live as long as if they are properly cared for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goldfish and google goldfish and most sites will say they get fairly old
