Fish reccomendations Part 2

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Like you are saying, if you move your filter over from the 40b you don't have to worry much about cycling or waiting months. You can move the fish right over once water in the new tank is same temperature and dechlorinated. Move filter and fish at same time. The other guy Neko's advice is well-intentioned but overly cautious (in my opinion).

So the tank is a 75 gallon with 2 senegal bichirs an angelfish and a rainbow shark? I agree I would add to the angelfish numbers, they are social cichlid and do well in groups. They come in various colors so your parents will probably enjoy them as well.

Do not add any old water from the 40g. You are just adding in bad water into the new tank. Just move all the filters over and you will have an instant cycle for ammonia and nitrite. You should not receive any ammonia/nitrite spikes (I've done this several times).

The more angels you have the better, having only 3 is a crapshoot for capability. I prefer to have more than 4 to disperse any aggression

You should keep the breeder tank or get a smaller one (even a plastic storage tote will work) as a quarantine tank for any new fish you get for the larger tank. Don't make the mistake of not quarantining your fish for a period of time (longer than 2 weeks).
Noted. I mostly dont quarantine because my LFS does it for me. They get the fish put them in tanks and go through the Medical procedures. Deworming and killing off the parasites. But I will have a talk with my parents about it. We are limited in space as its an apartment but we will see might keep the 40B as a quarantine/growout tank.

Yep thats the stocking so far ! I will get the tank custom built and it will be 65 gallons I believe (120 45 45 cm).Yeah seems like I will get 3 more Angels. My parents love them !
I got some questions tho:
I dont know the type of my Angelfish, I want to get the same breed so that they can have fry. Should I post a pic of her in case you or someone else might know ?
Other question is that I LOVE Polypterus. Would it be ok to get a Delhezi or 2 Rope fish along with the Angels or would it overstock too much ?
Thanks in advance !

If you don't want to medicate that's fine, but NEVER trust an LFS to do the quarantine job for you. Things can go wrong and mistakes made during their quarantine process.

Like I said, a storage tote will work as well. You can use it for other things after the quarantine process is over. You will need the storage tote for future fish sickness that may occur.

Gotcha. I will quarantine. Thanks for the advice !

I know nothing about them, but Jewel Cichlids maybe. They are African (I think).
A 48”x18”x18” tank gives options for different species of bichir. If you want to take that root, a Delhezi would be easy to find, and you could try some other top water fish. African butterflies are one fish that fascinates me. You can feed it crickets.

African predators:
-Leopard Ctenopama
-Hingemouths
-Peters Elephant Nose Fish
-Brown Knifefish

I didn’t quarantine any fish, but I don’t want to jinx myself. I bought fish from MFK members and stores with good reputations.

Marine tanks got me in the habit of qt…
Freshwater diseases are generally easier to treat but still not something you want in the dt.

The Masked Shadow The Masked Shadow makes a good point with jewel cichlids. They come from similar areas as bichirs (maybe they overlap?) and are very colorful. They get big enough to not get eaten. Only problem is that they are one of the nastier ones - most of that aggression is for other cichlids though.

I mainly want a Delhezi, love the color patterns and want something a bit bigger than my Senegals.
