So this will be all for the moment. Will have to leave the new system running for a few
more days to see how will be the impact on the water quality etc.

Next will post some older photos of the previous maintainance and the condition of the
outside sump. Hopefully this will serve to see whether there would be any difference between the new shower filter sytem and the previous sump with submerged japanese matting media.

till next few days cheers.

This is the old filter system after a few revisions. Decided to do the shower
thingy after 2 years of running this. The intensive cleaning have to be done every 3 months with some basic cleaning for the filter mats every month.

The indoor section of the pond would be closed off with the fishes safely
in there while the sump outside could be drained and the mats all taken out
to be cleaned. The sump wall are then scrubbed with brooms and finally hosed
down to clear all the dirt out through the drainage system behind the house.

All that will exit to the local park retention water feature. See the first few post for pictures of that.

Pict 1 and 2 show the indoor section during the cleaning of the outside sump section.

Water is very still and calm.

This is what the sump looks like before the cleanup.
The sediments on the filter media. The algae build up on the walls.

This occurs every three months or so.
So time for the scrub and cleaning.

More of the sump before the big cleanup.

The water would be drained at this time. The filter mats would be
taken out of the sump and each piece would be cleaned with rainwater
collected from two tanks.

You can see the filter mats being stacked upright between pvc pipe cages.
These would be remove and cleaned.

The sump fishes would be netted out and put in a holding small tank and
resettled when the sump is cleaned up.

The entire process would take a afternoon to be done. Rather tiring and sweaty
time.

This be what the sump would look like after some hosing down with the
water pipe and sweeping the gunk into the outlet at the end of the sump.
From the picture the outlet is at the top of the long sump.

For mosquito control. Guppies were put into the main pond and the sump.
In Addition we have a local product which was added to the pond as pictured
here.

Nearby the park there are a few of the local Asian Almond trees.
The dry collected leaves were used to condition the pond water.
This was done by soaking the dried leaves in the sump as shown.
