Fish Suggestions for my Little Bro

A single red wolffish. Hands down.

First thing that comes to mind is a school of exodons. About the best predatory fish you can keep in a tank that size. Very active silver fish with sharp teeth and real mean streak.

These were both going to be my suggestions haha. If you go with the red hi fin wolf be CAREFUL about him sticking his hands in there... my 7 incher snagged my pinky and gave it a good thrashing, and I'm 21. My pinky is probably about as thick as an 8 year olds thumb. I haven't got any solid proof, but there are tales of full grown reds being able to take fingers off. I doubt anyone wants to test it, especially with a child.

Bichirs are wonderful, and if you explain their ancient origins then this lil boy will get obsessed... like I did when I was 15 haha what little boy doesn't want a dinosaur in their room? (I know they are not literal dinos but just as old haha) also there is practically 0 chance of it hurting him. Things like pirahna and exos may give him a few good cuts if he's not careful, and let's be honest, what kind of 8 year old is careful?

X2 on a con.. or pair

As mentioned before exodons, piranhas are too high maintence for 8 year old. I am 14 and i can handle only a couple caribe.

Guys, let's be real here, no kid is going to have interest in convicts, especially when he says to his older bro the OP "I want mean fish that kill stuff". He would lose interest in a week. That's why if I set up a kids tank I always put something more interesting then a couple cichlids. When I did my ex gfs little bros tank I set him up w/ a 40 ga breeder, a pair of Senegal bichirs, and a couple leopard ctenopoma. He still calls me once every couple weeks asking random questions and such haha I haven't dated his sister for over a year. When I did my little cousins 30 ga I put butterfly fish and a couple ctens, they still love em.

Leopard Ctenopoma are a good choice, theyll be able to be in there for life and any little kid that's seen my tank loves how they just kind of act like a leaf when one of the bigger fish go by. VERY easy to care for IMO and won't be able to damage your little bro. Kids just LOVE that face, plus mine is quite personable, follows my finger and eats as soon as food hits the surface. You'd be surprised the bursts of speed these guys are capable of if they think a bichir is going to eat all the food haha

I have a female mayan in a 40g who chases us. Also we have a flowerhorn convict hybrid who topped off at 6". I dont understand why theyre saying not a con we have a male 5" con with a hump get him a female and put them in a 30g. A 30g is a little too small for anything tl really defend. Only huge fish cramped in a tank like that will glass bang. Little cichlids not so much..
