Hi, i have a 225 gallon fish tank that i have a bunch of 3-5" fish in there - red devils, flowerhorns, tinfoil barbs. there are about 12 fish in there i believe.

my question is what should my clean out schedule be for this tank? i am finding that the water clarity really goes YELLOWISH after about a week or so and it gives a bit of a smell too. its not tooo pleasant being its in the dining room too.

my filtration is: 1 Eheim 2028 Filter and 1 Aqua Clear Powerhead
im not sure, maybe is there different media i can put in the filter?

when i do water changes i find myself draining most of the water, i need some advice/help here.

usually the yellowish can be fixed with a carbon filter, and an ammonia/nitrate filter.. should fix the problem.. just keep up with the weekly water changes, do about a 40% change.

i dont rely on filters, waterchange is still the best, i do 40% twice a week

so you are saying to Add Carbon into my Eheim FIlter and an ammonia/ Nitrate substance also??

and i should always expect to do a 100Gallon water change weekly? no way around that huh?

is my tank filtered enough?

great site by the way - thanks so far for the advice here

Not too sure with the Eheim filter, and its filtration.. but im sure someone else would be alot more knowledgeable on them. But i know the carbon and ammonia filters do take the stink and yellow out. I currently only have a 60 gal, so water changes arent a problem for me.. but doing a 100 gallon water change every week seems like a lot to do at once, maybe just break it up with a 50 and 50 twice a week.

Some questions that should be asked about your tank, how long has it been set up? What do your water parameters look like, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels?

Regarding water changes, change enough water on a weekly basis to keep your nitrate levels in the 20 to 30 ppm range. Be aware that once your fish are full grown, it is likely that you'll be doing at least weekly 50% water changes.

Also, what kind of biomedia are you running. A filter doesn't mean anything if you don't have the correct or enough media.

If the stocking levels you list are correct that shouldn't be happening.
