Fish tanks in garage?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I live in Wisconcin all the way across Lake Michigan from you. My garage is not insalated or heated and it's bitter cold in there in the middle of winter and the heaters in my house only heat the tanks a few degress above the house temp. You can keep tanks in the garage in summer or keep natives in the tanks for year around tanking.

I live in Washington state and in the winter we get a few 20 deg days.. I have a 125g in my 2 car garage it’s dry walled but only insulated in the ceiling of the garage, what I did was insulate the long back side of the tank, the 2 small sides and the top of the tank... I cut holes for the lights and I cut out one spot for one of three lid openings so I could do water changes and feed the fish... I used solid foam insulation that I bought at the box store (I think it’s R9 to 11) and I run 2 large heaters.. 1 heater is the size for a 100 gal tank my temp stayed at 78 all winter... the garage did warm a bit due to the heat from the tank so that made it nice for working out there. No summer for me yet but we have had many 90 deg days so we shall see... I only have small panel insulation on now... oh and I used clear silicone to mount it to the plastic frame of the tank... it peels of with just a little work when you remove the foam for the summer.

Washington state here. All my tanks are in garage but it is insulated and heated. Your best bet is insulating your garage and also styro the sides of the tank. So much more room in the garage and no need to haul tanks up and down basement stairs. Plus if a catastrophe happens then you’ll just flood the garage and not the house.

hopefully this aint posted any where else.....I checked but couldn't find anything...
So here it goes......I was wondering can you keep a fish tank in a garage?
Because my Mom doesn't want anymore fish tanks in the house, and I just got a 180....
So I was goin to put it in the garage.....But I was wondering if anyone else had tried it?
And what kind of heater you need in the winter? And what would you do in the summer
when it gets too hot? And by the way I don't have insulation in my garage..Just a regular
nice garage...

And I live in Michigan,Jackson to let ya kno what the climate is like.....****ttttty.....
But has anyone here tried it? If so please tell me what you did...

Thanks.Tj

I would get a mini split ac/heater combo. I set mine to 76 and forget it. Your ac will dehumidify to some extent but depending on season and climate it would be best to have a dehumidifier that can handle your humidity load. One tank is not really a problem to some extent but if you are planning to build a multi-tank fish room you will need a lot of infrastructure built around your space and layout plan.
