Fish that go well with bichirs?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Almost any fish that doesn't fit into there mouth, and is not big enough to eat them.

Not always true I had a wild congo bichir I dropped in a 100 gal with veil tailed albino oscar and a green phantom pleco and the little bastard took em both out first the phantom went out with two bite marks on both sides of its head then three days later the oscar died from a bacterial infection from being biten for the same ammount of time

I think this is more of an exception than a rule. How big were these fish? I own 20 polys and ive never had one that attacked a fish it couldnt fit into its mouth.

We have 6 clown loaches, one dwarf gourami, and an african ghost knifefish with our two senegalus & one delhezi. Save for the dwarf gourami (which will eventually be eaten), all of these fish get quite large so they're not able to eat their tank mates. Also, I second the notion of fast fish. Polyps are slow swimmers so anything that is a little bigger and can scoot is a good match. Just make sure it's not anything too aggressive.

A lot of fish will work. However a fish to AVOID will be any type of pleco. Many bichir keepers report a pleco sucking on a bichirs slime coat. Not to bring up any argument on how likely it is but I would not take any chances with it.
As for GOOD tankmates:
Tinfoil Barbs
Silver Dollars
Bala Sharks
Some Peacock Bass
Oscars
Most Gars
Larger Geophagus
Fire Eels
Borneo Python Eels
Larger Datnoids
And MANY more...

I wish I caught video of my sassy teug biting my A. Stalsbergi just now then lol. I've found they can be nippy, depends on the individual it seems just like any other fish. So far I've only seen one Senegal and this teug do it though so the majority have been peaceful to other large fish
