fish to keep with jack dempseys?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
swordtails! lmao!!!
my jack has out grown my firemouth. I have an all male tank because I didn't want the aggression or babies. anything small enough for them to eat will be. i'd skip any barbs.

You'd likely end up with sibling fish, I think you should just keep the best ONE and then get another unrelated one from a diff provider when the upgrade occurs.

As far as tankmates, how about a half dozen swordtails?
I’m just kinda worried my swordtails would get picked off

In a 45 gal tank, there isn't any room for anything else except just a young pair of JDs, and that would only be temporary.
Below is a video of JD habitat in nature. They seldom do well with other cichlids, and share habitat with large mollies, but in a tiny tank like a 45, the mollies wouldn't stand a chance.
I have watched a mated pair defend a territory of about 250 gallons square from all other cichlids.

in the video below, where other cichlids share habitat, the JDs are quite torn up.

i went with a single clown loach and he is getting along great with everyone, not at all shy nor is anyone being aggressive.

that's a cool vid ! what are the cichlids with the 3 black spots toward the tail?

The fist has two common names depending on who you talk to. They are sometimes called Red Terrors or Mayan cichlid. They look a lot like M. Festae and get mixed up a lot. But the eyespot gives it away. Mayan is centered on the tail. Where as Festae it on the top half of the tail.

If you put any fish together young enough, feed them well, keep your water right, I have never seen a problem. Feeding schedules are required. Hungry fish are happy fish. Cichlids should be fed well. Keeps their friends alive and happy.
Started a tank. Cycled with Cory’s. Was going to get 2 discus. Took the girlfriend. Came home with 2 angels, 2 blue pearl gouramis, 2 red and 2 silver danios. She fell in love with 2 electric blue Jack Dempsey’s, in a tank with blue and orange freshwater lobsters. They came home with me. Lobsters ate the Cory’s. Tank 2-Lobster tank. Lol. Oh, I forgot the snails. Lol
3 points- 1-lobsters are the only thing that has to be alone. 2-Fish that grow up together, live together, pretty well. Adding an aggressive species causes a lot of flushing. 3- get the discus. Leave the girlfriend home.
Tank is fine. Amazing. Bored of the banter. No one knows. Two months. Not even a nipped fin. Got new Corys and a red tail shark. Try it. Adjust as necessary.Enjoy!
